“Hey, You’ve Got To Read This Harry Potter Clone!”

…said no one ever.

Why? Because why would you?

Let’s face it, if you like Harry Potter, you like Harry Potter. So why would you read a watered down version of that book, written by an author whose just trying to ride on the coat tails of the original’s success.

You wouldn’t.

The same way you wouldn’t kid yourself that the print you bought leaving the Louvre, was as valuable as the Mona Lisa that hung inside.

Both are original ideas, and to tell you the truth, both originals exist only in the minds of their creators. The finished article is the first copy. – Now that’s something to wrap your noodle around.

So when it comes to writing your work. It should be your writing.

Once you can do that, you separate yourself from the other copycats.

Sure, you have to follow a set pattern for each genre, the same way a county and western song and a dance tune have to sound a certain way.

But when you’re copying someone else’s plot and narrative, you’re never going to make any reader say anything other than, ‘I’m sure I’ve read this somewhere before?’

Or as Kurt Cobain said once…

‘Do your own thing. Others own their own thing. If you copy too much, you’ll find yourself in late night cocktail lounge cover limbo.’

Your mission, should you accept it, is to make something original.

It’s time to take the training wheels off your creativity.  – That’s why I called my course Super Simple Story Lines.

And not ‘Copycat Cash Cop Out.’

CLOSES TOMORROW
