“Paging Dr Paradise!…….Paging Dr Paradise!”

…back when I used to work in a call centre, I once had a ‘Dr. Paradise’ on the line looking to pay his gas and electric bill.

Thinking it was a wind up, I typed in his account number, and sure enough, up pops his record.

Dr. Paradise.

Now, I don’t know about you, but names sometimes send me off down a mental rabbit hole.

Dr Paradise…..now to me, he has to be good looking. I mean, with a name like that, he has to be fighting off the trainee nurses.

Definitely a bachelor….has to be.

As for the car he drives….it’s got to be a convertible. – With the top down, he screeches into the car park every morning and into his reserved parking spot.

Then it’s off to the ER department, where he charms both the young and old with a twinkle in his eye, and rightly diagnoses medical conditions even before the test results come back the lab.

And as for treating the ladies well, come on, it is Dr Paradise after all. What woman wouldn’t have a fun night out with him?

Nothing complicated, right?

You simply add layer upon layer, until the little thing you started off with, grows into someone that’s almost as real as you are.

Do it well enough, and your books and short stories will be remembered long after your readers finished them.

Thing is, you can do all the fun work of the character building. The writing part? Well, you can get someone else to all the hard work for you.
