Messing With Your Head
…if there’s one thing you need to get over, it’s driving with the handbrake on.
Doesn’t matter if you’re writing, publishing, or creating something, you’ve got some limits in that little ole noggin of yours.
‘You don’t deserve to earn a thousand bucks a week.’
‘This is too easy, something’s got to go wrong.’
‘Your parents worked hard for their money. And you’re earning their weekly wage after two days work? You gotta feel guilty for that!’
‘Remember that English teacher? There’s a good reason he gave you an F. You know you can’t write to save your life.’
‘You’re the dummy in the family.’
Any of those striking home?
Or maybe you’ve got a few like that running around your head right now?
All of those are hurdles are going to stop you from having any success. Have even the smallest amount of success and you’re going to doubt yourself. You’re going to sabotage yourself. You’re going to procrastinate. You’re going to feel guilty. All to fulfill those stories in your head.
In my own case, when the first picture book came out, and sold really well on the WarriorForum, I watched the sales come rushing in and felt ecstatic. I never made money so quickly and so easily.
Then the little voice chipped in.
‘This is too easy, something’s gonna go wrong.’
‘People work hard to make a fraction of that amount, and you’re doing all this while working from home, this doesn’t seem right.’
‘You’re gonna be found out, just you wait for all the refunds. They’re all gonna come in in a few days.’
‘Shouldn’t you feel a….little guilty?’
So while I was having the time of my life. Part of me wouldn’t allow myself to enjoy that party. When the sales dropped off, that little voice shut up again.
And that’s something no one tells you.
It’s easy buying a push button business, but if you don’t believe you deserve the success you could have, well, it’s wasted money. You’ll purposely drive the car off the cliff to agree with what you tell yourself.
So whatever you’re gonna do this week, ask yourself…’Do I think this is going to work?….And if it does, will I be able to accept the success that comes from it?’
If either of those are a ‘no,’ then you’ve got a ‘Clean up on aisle three’ that you need to take care of.
Now, if you’ve got a doubt about your writing ability, you can easily bypass that negative talk by using this.
PS – Doubt anyone’s told you to look under the mental hood this week. But it’s time well spent.
