Ever Make One Of Your Readers Cry?

….and in a good way. Although there were a good few that cried for all the wrong reasons.

But what do they know…

Anyhoo,

…In the review a parent told me that her daughter cried after reading how the heroine had lost her brother to an accident and was deeply affected by it

…I think the passage was less than a paragraph long…but to that child my heroine had had a tough time and had cried for her.

That’s what it’s like when you get so in tune with a character that they take on a whole new dimension. In my A – Z of characters I go into how to do that.

A – Appearance – Like us, your characters will have a physical appearance. Which can make a difference to who they are and how they live in your story. Someone with a blemish free face, can make it easily through a romance novel and find a mate. A solider coming home from war with a badly burned face on the other hand, is going to live a completely different life and interact differently with other characters.

Apart from things like physical disabilities, your character’s bulk and fitness also have to be taken into account. An obese detective isn’t going to break into a world breaking sprint and catch the killer, or squeeze into a small
air conditioning shaft even if he has to.

It’s easy to jump to the immediate perfect teeth, perfect hair, perfect body stereotype when coming up with a character. The world’s not like that. You’ll find more love handles than six packs, thunder thighs than killer pins, and crooked teeth than Hollywood smiles.

You can of course (it is your book after all) go down the route of Mr or Miss Perfect, but by being more imaginative and looking at the people we live with, will give your character something readers can latch onto….
