The Pat On The Head You Get From Platforms
…this morning an article on Medium grabbed my attention in my inbox.
‘This Is How Much YouTube Paid Me For My 1,000,000 Viewed Video.’
Curious?
Now, before you scroll down further and read the amount, I want you to come up with a figure.
How much do you think it is?
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Between 2,000 and 5,000 bucks.
Lower than you thought?
It was for me.
Now, I don’t know how that video was monetized, it might have just been those ads that most of us click to avoid, but
for a million eyeballs that sounds very low to me.
How so?
Well, let’s imagine that video was on your site.
And let’s say you had a call to action for a free report.
And let’s say that you got just one per cent of folks to join your mailing list.
And let’s say that those 10,000 subscribers were directed to a low content product of yours?
Say ten bucks?
And let’s say that 1,000 people bought it.
That’s 10,000 versus 2-5000.
Sound better.
And imagine you emailed those subscribers for a full year?
Even if you only sold one new product in the other 11 months, you could easily double that amount.
Now for those that don’t know how to do all the above, that money above sounds fantastic.
To me, it’s a little pat on the head.
It’s a ‘thanks’ for building out my site, and here’s a little change for your trouble.
Same with Facebook, same with Twitter, and all other platforms that people post their content to.
Building out sites for other people in return for a thumbs-up, retweet, or a digital ‘good boy/gal’ pat on the back.
Do I post to those sites myself?
Sure do, to get in front of more people.
But I also post all of that content on my own site too.
And so should you.
Getting a pat on the head is nice, but it’s worth far more when it’s on something you can control.
