A Lesson Learned From ‘Grasshopper’

…many moons ago, I joined a book club.

Now, not one of those where we all sit down and talk about a book, but one where you buy one each month.

One particular month, I saw a picture of David Carradine on the front of a Tai Chi book.

And knowing how well he used to handle himself on Kung Fu, I thought I’d give it a go.

So a week later, I’m trying my best to stand on one leg and pretending I’m rolling some kinda energy ball around in my hands. – Which truth be told, is a lot harder than you think.

Not as hard as Yoga, but for someone that was as flexible as a floorboard, it was tough going in the beginning. 

But I stuck with it and what do you know…it got easier.

‘You must keep your practice up,’ Grasshopper told me in the introduction.

‘It’s like a wooden water wheel. Once it’s kept spinning, the water is flung off it. But, let it stop and the rot sets in. Not only making it weaker, and making it harder to get it going once more.’

You’d think I would have taken that advice to heart, but after dropping it for a few weeks and getting back into it…my knees once more complained about the pain I was putting them through.

The easiest thing to keep moving is a wheel that’s already rolling…or a routine you follow daily.

The hardest part, as Mr Carridine said, is getting the wheel moving again.

It’s tough sometimes, almost as tough as starting off in the first place.

I know this only too well.

After allowing the podcast to drop by the wayside, and not having to force myself to come up with content ideas, my emails suffered for it.

Each day I let a day slide by, it was just as easy to toss in one or two more, and take a longer break from things.

Now that I’m trying to get back there, I’ll admit…it’s tough going.

I don’t know if it’s a 2020 thing, or just me right now.

But the water wheel’s a lot of excess water to shake off. – A little of that’s on the waistline too.
