Back When I Was A Swearing Toddler
…a story, that my mother loved to wheel out to embarrass me, was the swearing toddler one.
What is it?
Well, let’s take a journey back in time….over forty years to be exact.
Back then my father was a truck driver and drove all over Ireland, England, and Scotland delivering parts for oil rigs.
Probably like Ice road truckers, minus the ice, and grizzly bears and stuff.
And back then, because we kids weren’t of school age, we spent most of the time going everywhere with him.
I don’t remember much of it, other than the time when we got German measles and he had to get sunglasses for me and my little sister. – Because we couldn’t stand the daylight.
Anyway…
…my mother said that she was watching me rooting around my father’s seat, one day, pulling at my leg.
‘You OK?’
“‘F**k….F**k….F**k.”
“What did you say?”
“Nothing.” I turned to her, with my soother clamped in the corner of my mouth.
‘You sure?’
She said I nodded, and got back to swearing under my breath until I got my leg free.
She said that it was funny at the time because I thought no one was listening to me and I had a bad stutter at the time, but I didn’t get that green card for long.
Shortly after that it was ‘Flip this’, and ‘Flip that’ when I got into trouble.
I don’t how she stopped me, but I never swore until my very late teens.
As for the stutter, I don’t know where that went.
Although it comes back the odd time when I’m nervous.
But if I still had it bad, I know I’d lean into it when it comes to content marketing.
Most people lean the other way.
They’re afraid of an accent on a podcast, having a visible scar on a video, or misspellings in written content.
But having those things humanizes you…and makes you uncopyable.
Because let’s face it, if you’re like every other Tom, Dick, and Harry…what’s going to make you stand out?
So, as the great Ben Settle would say, ‘Copyright Your Flaws.’
Use them to your advantage.
If that isn’t a good enough reason to be you…warts and all…I don’t know what is.
Have a good one!
Oh, and you’ll find out plenty of ways on doing that here.
