Anything Great Is Going To Involve Discomfort

In a world where we don’t need to cross the room to turn on the TV,  wait five minutes for our computer to connect to the Internet, and now don’t even have to walk out the door to pick up fast food, it’s easy to love the comfortable life.

Maybe I’m turning into an old fart, but coming from a time when we had to walk, wait, and go out to McDonald’s, it’s easy to fall in love with this new lifestyle. We haven’t come to the stage, where we’re a Roman emperor being fed grapes by hand while lying on our couch, but I’m sure we’re not that far away. – Maybe there’ll be a VR version of that somewhere down the road. – But being comfortable, sure is comfortable.

But it’s got its downside. We get lazy, fat, and start to develop a lack of patience. ‘Give me everything now,’ we cry while sitting comfy on our Lazyboy watching our 300 inch TV screen.  And yet, everything of value is on the other side of being comfortable.

If we want to lose weight, it’s going to involve getting the trainers on and breaking out in a sweat. If we want to learn a new skill it’s going to involve learning new skills and repeating them endlessly. And unless you intend to spend the rest of your life living with a sexbot, you’re going to have to brush your hair, put a smile on that face of yours, and go out and meet a potential life partner. – While all are uncomfortable we know there’s a big payoff on the other side. There’s a price to be paid.

And that’s the thing, paying the price brings its own reward.  We feel better about ourselves for burning off those pounds using the pavement than a handful of weight loss pills.  When we can pick any song and play it after hearing it only once, is a lot more satisfying than boring our audience with the only one song we know. And buying a Russian bride on the Internet can’t be compared to actually going out into the real world and meeting someone yourself.

While we don’t like getting uncomfortable, that’s where the great rewards are. And if there’s something great that you’d like to achieve I can almost guarantee it’s going to be on the other side of being comfortable. You’re going to have to do something you’ve never done before, put yourself in a situation where you’ll probably embarrass yourself, and you can bet on it that you’ll suck big time. Plus, your ego will probably take a bruising. – And that’s why, like I named this post, anything great is going to involve discomfort.

You’ve got to get comfortable being uncomfortable. Which is a good play on words, and we smile on hearing it, and yet we don’t really hear it. We don’t absorb the message. We don’t take that message to heart and tell ourselves that running around in the shallow end of the pool isn’t going to give us the life we want. And that’s why so few people stand on the top of the mountain.  We think we can have the Instagram ‘millionaire lifestyle’ of fast cars and infinity pools and still live in the valley.  – Unfortunately, Amazon doesn’t do those types of home deliveries. Although some of the Instagram folk think so. : )

If there’s anything that’s going to be a measure of how high you can go, it’s going to be in relation to how willing you are to get uncomfortable. Singing into a hairbrush and standing in front of your mirror is risk-free, but it’s also result free.

The ones that sell out the stadiums, on the other hand, have been on a different journey. Times when no one cared about them. Times when they carried their own equipment. And times when they were on the verge of giving up. – But we don’t want to hear that. It’s ‘stay safe’ and see if there’s an express pass where we can leapfrog all that discomfort.

It’s can’t be done.

But there’s still a part of us that believes in that fable. That’s why we don’t do what needs to be done. And that’s why we’ll always remain where we are. – Comfortable, but not living the life we’d really like to live.
