My Mother, The Archaeologist
…many, many moons back, I remember watching a TV show with my mother where a group of archaeologists were doing a dig somewhere.
We watched them dusting the ground off and pulling something from it.
‘I always wanted to do that.’
‘You did.’
‘Yeah, I always wanted to be an archaeologist.’
‘Why didn’t you?’
‘Well, I had you….’
And then all the reasons were ruled out. – Age, education, this, that, the other…
All reasons why she couldn’t do, or ever do it for that matter.
That door was closed solid, and all she could do was look in the window at what might have been.
I’m sure, if she wanted to, she could have made some attempt to get closer to that dream of hers.
But she never did, and she’ll take that dream to the grave with her.
What about you?
What are you going to pack up and take with you from the world?
A book?
Poetry?
Paintings?
An invention?
A business?
And you’re going to take it with you with a heavy heart.
Do it.
Do it and screw what the family might think.
Do it and screw what your friends might think.
Do it and screw what the neighbours might think.
You weren’t put on this planet to make all those people happy.
You came here to have fun in this sandbox we call life
And in your little sandbox, you can do whatever you want.
You could create the weirdest sandcastle, but it’ll be your sandcastle.
Whether others like it or not doesn’t matter.
You’ve scratched that itch.
You’ve pulled out that splinter.
You’ve given birth to the thing you wanted to give birth to.
There’s no better feeling than marking that thing off your to-do list.
To do something you’ve always wanted to do.
My mother never will, and she’ll take that dream with her.
I don’t want that for you.
Create it, make it, do it.
And even if others think it’s dumb, stupid, or horrible.
You’ll have the last laugh, you did what you came here to do.
Stop telling that story of why you can’t do it, and talk about how you’re going to do it.
But do it…
