No One Can Predict The Outcome – So Just Do It

…I was reading a book the other day, about a company that was trying to get a podcast service off the ground.

For whatever reason, the progress was slow and they weren’t making much headway.

And….frustrated by the lack of progress, one of the team went off working on a side project which seemed a better option.

Now….. not wanting to go down that route with his investors’ money, he called them all up, told them the direction they would be going in, and that if they weren’t interested, he’d give them back their investment.

Sadly for them, they all said yes.

That little side hustle turned out to be…. Twitter.

Yeah, I’d be sick as a pig on missing that one too.

And that’s the thing about new ideas, new niches, new products, new blogs, new podcasts… none of us knows what’ll happen next.

You could have the idea for the next Harry Potter book, you could start a blog that all of the moms in the world flock to, or you could create a podcast that goes screaming up the iTunes charts on its third episode.

You never know.

Now, of course, we can predict what going to work by looking at what’s already having success, but even then there’s always a wildcard that no one sees coming.

And sometimes you’re the right person, with the right idea, at the right time, and you get green lights all the way.

But a lot of us don’t get that far.

We doubt our idea before we try it out.

‘What if I do this and I fail?’

‘What if I make a fool out of myself?’

‘What if this is a waste of my time?’

You know, some people spend years of their life training for the Olympics and never win a medal.

Most footballers never get a chance to play in the English Premiership.

Most drivers will never drive a Formula 1 car.

Most writers are lucky if they sell a handful of books.

You’ll never know if you’re good enough, or if it’s right for you, unless you put yourself in the game.

Sitting on the sideline with an untested idea will never give you the answer you’re looking for.

You’ve got to take it out there, test it, and possibly toss it away if it doesn’t work.

The best advice I heard recently was to change your mindset to one of a scientist. You take an idea, experiment with it, and you see if it works or doesn’t.

If it didn’t work, that’s a failed experiment. – Not a failed scientist.

Remember that, you’re a tester of ideas.

Not a failure, having one goof up after another.

There’s a difference.

Most people don’t see that and so they don’t try.

You could be sitting on something amazing right now, but you’ll never know unless you try.

And if it does fail, remember that Twitter story up there. That failure could be leading you to something better.
